Driving in Winter Weather

Driving in Winter Weather

While Florida is known as the Sunshine State, it is prone to bad weather from time to time. While it’s rare to see ice or snow, the state does get a lot of rain due to humidity, making the roads wet and slick.

Driving in these conditions can be scary and even deadly. On top of that, Florida is one of the most dangerous states in the country when it comes to driving and car accidents. Plus, we are nearing the holiday season, so despite COVID-19, there is expected to be more vehicles on the roadways for the rest of the year.

Given this information, how can you prevent serious accidents while driving in Florida? It’s not too hard if you know what to do. Here are some tips to avoid accidents.

Prepare Your Vehicle

In many cases, accident prevention comes from proper maintenance. As the temperatures drop, it’s important to keep your vehicle in tiptop shape. Check the tires’ pressure and tread and inflate or replace them as needed. Make sure the battery is charged and in good condition. Replace squeaky brakes. Check to see that all lights are in good working order. Make sure your windshield wipers work and that you have enough coolant. All of these things can keep you and your vehicle safe during your winter travels.

Plan Your Route

Know where you are going before you get in the car. Check weather and traffic conditions. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. Winter weather requires you to drive more slowly, so don’t be in a hurry.

Drive Appropriately

If you have a new vehicle, get to know how it works before taking it on a winter drive. Drive slow. Avoid slamming on your brakes, which can cause you to skid. Instead, decelerate slowly. Increase your distance between vehicles so you have more room to slow down. Instead of 3-4 seconds, opt for 6 seconds or more. Be careful when traveling over hills. Don’t accelerate quickly and don’t stop while on a hill.

Prepare for Emergencies

Even if you try your hardest to avoid crashes, they can still happen at any time. Therefore, it’s best to be prepared. Keep at least a half tank of gas in your car at all times. Keep supplies in your car in case of a breakdown, such as clothing, water, snacks, blankets and flashlights. It may be helpful to have jumper cables and flares as well.
